The main rosemary shampoo benefits are a thoroughly clean, refreshed scalp, a crisp herbal scent that makes washing feel like a treat and, in a well-made formula, softer and shinier hair. What rosemary shampoo can't promise is hair growth. The evidence for rosemary and growth is limited, and a shampoo that's rinsed off after a minute or two is a long way from the treatments that have been studied.

So is it worth using? If you enjoy the fresh feel and want a gentle everyday shampoo, absolutely. This guide explains what rosemary shampoo does, what the research says, how to use it and when a hair concern is better taken to your GP.

Why is everyone talking about rosemary for hair?

Rosemary has been used in hair rinses for a long time, but its recent popularity comes mostly from social media, where rosemary oil and rosemary water have been widely promoted as ways to grow longer, thicker hair. Shampoos, conditioners and scalp serums featuring rosemary have followed.

On an ingredients list, rosemary often appears as Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil or Leaf Extract. Botanists have since moved rosemary into the sage genus and renamed it Salvia rosmarinus, so you may see either name.

It often comes paired with mint. Mint gives a cool, tingly feeling on the scalp that many people find refreshing, especially after exercise or on a warm day.

Rosemary shampoo benefits: what it actually does

Here's what you can reasonably expect from a good rosemary shampoo.

A clean, comfortable scalp

The core job of any shampoo is to lift away oil, sweat, dead skin and styling product. A clean scalp feels better: less itchy, less heavy and less prone to that "day three" feeling.

A fresh, herbal scent

Rosemary has a clean, slightly woody fragrance, and paired with mint it smells bright and crisp. It sounds minor, but a product you enjoy using is a product you'll use consistently.

A cooling, invigorating feel

Mint-based blends leave a gentle tingle that makes a morning wash feel more awake. It's a sensation rather than a treatment, but it's a big part of why people love these shampoos.

Softer, shinier lengths

This depends on the formula rather than the rosemary itself. A shampoo designed for dry or damaged hair can help your lengths feel smoother and look healthier, particularly when followed by conditioner.

What does the research say about rosemary and hair growth?

The study most often quoted is a small trial from 2015. It compared rosemary oil with a low-strength minoxidil treatment in people with pattern hair loss over six months, and found hair counts improved in both groups by a similar amount. That sounds exciting, but there are important caveats:

  • It was small. One modest trial isn't enough to prove a treatment works.
  • It used rosemary oil left on the scalp, not a shampoo that's rinsed off after a minute or two.
  • Larger, well-designed trials are still lacking, so nobody can say with confidence who might benefit, or how much.

The honest summary is that rosemary is interesting but unproven for hair growth. It's also worth knowing that hair grows slowly and in cycles, so any product claiming visible growth in a few weeks deserves scepticism.

Don't try to make a shampoo "stronger" by adding neat rosemary essential oil, either. Essential oils are concentrated and can irritate the skin if they're not properly diluted.

When to see a GP about hair loss

A bit of daily shedding is completely normal. The NHS notes that most people lose around 50 to 100 hairs a day, often without noticing. Hair loss can also be temporary, for example after an illness, a stressful period, significant weight loss or when iron levels are low.

The NHS suggests seeing a GP if:

  • you've suddenly started losing hair
  • you have bald patches, or are losing hair in clumps
  • your head burns or itches along with the hair loss
  • you're worried about your hair loss

A GP can look for underlying causes and talk you through treatments that have stronger evidence behind them. For flaky or itchy scalps, a pharmacist is a good first stop.

How to use rosemary shampoo

  1. Wet your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  2. Use a small amount, roughly a coin-sized blob for short to medium hair, a little more for long or thick hair.
  3. Massage it into your scalp with your fingertips, not your nails, for about a minute. It's relaxing, it lifts away build-up, and it's the part where the fresh, tingly feel comes in.
  4. Let the lather run through your lengths as you rinse, rather than scrubbing the ends.
  5. Rinse thoroughly, keeping the suds out of your eyes, as mint can sting.
  6. Condition your mid-lengths and ends, especially if your hair is dry or long.

You can use rosemary shampoo as often as you'd normally wash. If you're unsure what that should be, our guide on how often you should wash your hair breaks it down by hair type.

Who is rosemary shampoo good for?

Rosemary shampoo suits most hair types. It's a particularly good match if you:

  • Wash often, for example after the gym or sport, and want something that feels fresh every time. Our gym hair care routine has more ideas for sweaty-scalp days.
  • Love a herbal, spa-like scent rather than something sweet or fruity.
  • Want a lightweight feel that doesn't weigh hair down.
  • Have dry or dull lengths, as long as you choose a formula designed for them and follow with conditioner.

It may not suit you if you have a very sensitive scalp or react to fragranced products. If dryness is your main concern, our guide to finding the right shampoo for dry hair covers the ingredients to look for.

Our pick: XHC Rosemary & Mint Shampoo 3 Pack

The XHC Rosemary & Mint Shampoo 3 Pack gives you three full-size 300ml bottles of a revitalising rosemary and mint shampoo. Its crisp herbal blend gently cleanses and refreshes, leaving hair feeling clean, light and revitalised. It's a lightweight formula that helps smooth the lengths and improve softness without heaviness, and it's designed for hair that feels dry, dull or in need of extra care. It's also vegan and cruelty-free.

At the time of writing, the 3 pack was £9.79 on Amazon, about £3.26 a bottle or roughly £1.09 per 100ml. To be clear, we're recommending it for the clean, fresh feel and the value, not as a hair growth treatment.

The bottom line on rosemary shampoo

Rosemary shampoo is a lovely everyday shampoo: clean, fresh, invigorating and pleasant to use. Enjoy it for those reasons, but be wary of any product that promises regrowth. If you're losing hair, the most useful next step is a chat with your GP, not a new bottle.

At PoundMart, we bundle everyday haircare into multi-packs so you can stock up and save. Browse our haircare collection for XHC shampoos, conditioners and shampoo bars, and find something that suits your hair down to the ground.

Frequently asked questions

Does rosemary shampoo really help hair grow?

There's no reliable evidence that rosemary shampoo makes hair grow. The research on rosemary and hair growth is limited to a small number of studies, mostly using rosemary oil left on the scalp rather than a shampoo that's rinsed off. Enjoy rosemary shampoo for its fresh feel and speak to a GP if you're worried about hair loss.

Can I use rosemary shampoo every day?

Yes, if it suits your scalp and your hair doesn't feel dry. People who wash daily, such as those who exercise a lot, often like a fresh herbal shampoo. If your lengths start feeling dry, shampoo only your scalp and use conditioner every time.

Is rosemary shampoo good for dry hair?

It can be, as long as you pick a formula designed for dry or damaged hair and follow it with conditioner. Rosemary itself isn't a moisturiser, so the rest of the formula matters most. Keep the lather on your scalp and let it rinse through your lengths.

Is rosemary oil or rosemary water better than rosemary shampoo?

They do different jobs. Rosemary oil and rosemary water are left on the scalp, which is why they're the forms that have been studied, though the evidence for growth is still limited. Shampoo is about cleaning and freshness, and neat essential oil should never go straight on your skin without dilution.

How long does it take to see results from rosemary shampoo?

The fresh, clean feeling is immediate, and a well-formulated shampoo can leave hair feeling softer from the first wash. Claims about visible growth are a different matter: hair grows slowly and in cycles, and there's no good evidence a rosemary shampoo changes that.
